For the fence post in the corner of the herb garden, I had intended to find an owl fence-post topper, but there wasn’t much of a selection, even online. I didn’t like any I found, so I decided to make my own fence-post topper. I found a pin on Pinterest for a birdhouse that had been painted to look like a watermelon. It was an item that had been posted on Etsy. I decided to make my own version, so I got a cheap unfinished birdhouse at Michael’s and painted it myself.
The seeds I painted are nowhere near perfect. I didn’t make them big enough, and there are probably too many, but I still think it turned out cute!
I had to wait 72 hours after painting it before I could put it outside and expose it to any moisture. The outdoor acrylic paint I used said to wait 72 hours. It’s been well over that, and I haven’t attached it to the post yet. I think I want to get some clear varnish and put a couple of coats over the outside to help protect it some. I’m pretty sure this wood is not weatherproof, so I don’t know how long the birdhouse will last if I don’t do something else to help preserve it. I’ll do a follow-up post when I decide what to do in that regard.
