We have 5 cats, and thankfully all of them use the same kitty litter box. I don’t remember what kitty litter we started using, but a PetsMart employee once recommended Arm & Hammer Kitty Litter. Let me just say that was terrible. It might work for one cat, but even the multi-cat formula had our apartment (at the time) smelling like a urinal within 24 hours. We immediately switched back to the brand we first started using.
Alex started doing research online about different kitty litters, and we decided try World’s Best Cat Litter. The mix is made from 100% whole-kernel corn, and it clumped fantastic! This made scooping the litter 20 times easier, but it wasn’t the most pleasant smell (despite the claims on the bag). So we decided to mix it with another kitty litter and BINGO! For a couple of years now, we have been mixing Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat Multi-Cat kitty litter with the World’s Best Cat Litter. We’ve been told by many people that it doesn’t smell like we have cats in our house (thank goodness).
These 2 kitty litters are not cheap. At PetsMart, I pay anywhere from $51 – $53 (depending on Pet Perks) for both bags combined. However, it will last you a LONG time. I have 5 cats. The last time I purchased both bags was December 28, 2012, and I didn’t have to buy more until February 19, 2013. So it almost lasts 2 months with our 5 cats.
To make it easier to change out the kitty litter periodically and to avoid having 2 bags sitting in my cleaning closet, I bought a large dog food container at PetsMart to mix the 2 large bags once purchased. I don’t remember what size this container is, but it holds a 40 lb bag of the Precious Cat litter mixed with a 28 lb bag of the World’s Best cat litter.

When mixing, I just pour a little of one and then the other into my container and use the scoop to mix up the two. I continue this process until I’ve used up both bags. This ensures the 2 kitty litters will be mixed somewhat evenly.
Once I’ve finished mixing, I change out the kitty litter in their box and store the plastic container of kitty litter in my cleaning closet.
